  • English
  • Does Clickmax know when a contact came from a WhatsApp ad?

Yes. When someone clicks a Meta ad that opens a conversation (the WhatsApp Send message button) and sends the first message, Meta tells which ad they came from. Clickmax stores that click on the contact who sent the message — no page, no link and no UTM, because with this kind of ad the person never goes through a browser.

The same applies to ads that open a conversation in Instagram Direct.

    Before you start

    • A WhatsApp number connected through the official API — see Connect your WhatsApp. For Direct, the Instagram account connected — see Connect Instagram.
    • The ad must point to that number (or that Instagram account). Conversations arriving on another number do not go through Clickmax.
    • There is nothing to turn on: recording is automatic once the channel is connected.

    What gets recorded

For each ad click, Clickmax stores on the contact:

    • The source ad — the ad id in Meta, the same one shown in Ads Manager. For a boosted post, the post id.
    • The ad headline and the ad link, when Meta sends them.
    • The click time — the time of the first message.
    • The click identifier WhatsApp generates for the conversation. Instagram does not send this identifier.

Clicks are recorded per contact, not per conversation: if the same person comes back through another ad, both clicks are kept. If Meta delivers the same message more than once, the click is not duplicated.

The click has no screen of its own: it feeds the ad's numbers in Traffic → Performance — the contacts and sales it brought add up in that ad's leads, sales and revenue columns. See How does Clickmax know which leads and sales came from each ad?.

    What it is for

    • Per-ad attribution — contacts and sales that started in a conversation are credited to the ad that brought them, instead of having no source because they never went through a page.
    • Sending conversions back to Meta — with the click identifier, this contact's conversions (the conversation started and CRM events, such as the won opportunity) can go back to Meta through the Conversions API tied to the original conversation, which helps Meta optimize the campaign for buyers, not just for people who send a message. See Why do some events reach Meta even when the visitor has an ad blocker?.

When the click is not recorded

    • Ad without the id — if Meta sends neither the source ad nor the click identifier, there is nothing to attribute.
    • Regular chat links (wa.me, ig.me, QR code) — they do not come from an ad and are not recorded as a click.
