  • How to filter contacts who opened, clicked or did not open my emails

The contacts filter has an Email engagement condition: it finds contacts who opened an email, clicked an email link or received and did not open, at any time or in the last N days, from any email or from a specific campaign — or those who opened at least N of the last M campaigns they received. Automatic opens and clicks by bots and antivirus do not count.

    Before you start

    • A workspace role with access to the CRM and permission to see contacts.
    • The condition covers emails sent by Clickmax, from both campaigns and automations.

    Build the filter

    1. Open My Contacts and click Filters.
    2. Add a condition and pick the Email engagement field (Messages group).
    3. Next to the field, choose the mode:
      • had: the contact must show the behavior described in the block;
      • did not have: the contact must not show that behavior.
    4. In the block below the condition, describe the behavior:
      • Action: opened an email, clicked an email link, received and did not open or opened campaigns.
      • Period: at any time or in the last days. When you pick the last days, enter how many, from 1 to 365.
      • Campaign: keep Any email (campaign or automation) or search for an email campaign by name.
      • With opened campaigns, period and campaign give way to a count: at least N of the last M campaigns. Use 1 to 20 campaigns, with the minimum up to that number.
    5. Combine it with other contact conditions as usual. To reuse the audience, click Save as segment.

The same block is available when you create or edit a segment and in the contacts specialist mode.

What counts as an open and a click

    • A click counts as an open. Whoever clicked a link is included in "opened an email", even if their email app blocked images and the open was not recorded.
    • Bots do not count. Automatic opens and clicks by spam filters, antivirus and inbox prefetching are left out. It is the same rule as the human opens and clicks shown in the campaign insights, so a campaign audience can be smaller than the total opens the campaign shows.
    • Opened campaigns only looks at the campaigns the contact received, newest first. Automation emails and test sends are not campaigns. A contact who received fewer campaigns than the chosen number is counted on the ones received.
    • Received and did not open only considers delivered emails (failed sends are left out) and counts the period from the send time. For opened and clicked, the period counts from the open or the click.

    Ready-made examples

    • Recently engaged: had + opened an email + last 30 days.
    • Unengaged for 60 days: did not have + opened an email + last 60 days.
    • Received the campaign and ignored it: had + received and did not open + the chosen campaign → send a new subject line just to them.
    • Truly engaged: had + opened campaigns + at least 2 of the last 5.
    • Opened the last 3 campaigns: had + opened campaigns + at least 3 of the last 3.
    • Ignored the last 5 campaigns: did not have + opened campaigns + at least 1 of the last 5 (includes contacts who never got a campaign).
    • Clicked the offer: had + clicked an email link + the offer campaign → sales follow-up automation.

For "received an email in the last 30 days and engaged with none", use two conditions: had + received and did not open + 30 days and did not have + opened an email + 30 days.

    Good practices and limits

    • Every choice in the block applies to the same email. To combine behaviors across different emails (opened campaign A and did not open B), add two conditions.
    • In the My Contacts filter, the count is calculated on the spot. A saved segment with a period in days is refreshed about once a day on screen, but a broadcast to it recalculates the audience the moment you create, schedule or edit the broadcast. A scheduled broadcast goes to the audience of that moment, not of the send day. A single broadcast accepts up to 10 segments with a period in days.
    • For older emails, some opens may not have been recorded; for long periods, treat the number as a floor.
    • Opened campaigns changes when a new campaign goes out or someone opens: in a saved segment it is refreshed with the segment, about once a day.
