Record the opportunity's SDR or Closer from the automation
The Assignment automation sets who owns the opportunity. It can also record that person in a pipeline role — SDR, Closer, or any other role you configured. They are different things: the owner is who takes the next action; the role is who played that part in the deal, and the pipeline commission hangs on it.
Without the role, an opportunity assigned by an automation stays out of the commission calculation, even with the owner filled in.
Before you start
- Workspace role: owner, admin, or an agent with the coordinator subrole. Without it the automations screen is read-only. See what each role can do in the permissions table.
- The pipeline needs roles configured. If it doesn't have any yet, set them up in Pipeline settings → Agents & Teams — with no roles, the option stays disabled in the automation.
Steps
- Open the pipeline and, on the stage that will assign, click Create automation.
- In the Type step, choose Assignment and click Continue.
- Under How to assign, choose who receives it: Round-robin, Always the same (fixed), or Random.
- Under What the automation sets, turn on Role on the card.
- In Role, pick the role the person will hold (for example SDR).
- In If the role already has someone, choose Keep the current holder or Replace with the new agent.
- Optional: turn off Card owner if the automation should record only the role, without changing who takes the next action.
- Click Save.
From then on, every opportunity that enters the stage gets the chosen agent in the configured role — already carrying that role's commission on the pipeline. Opportunities already in the stage are not changed.
Owner and role are independent choices
You can't save with both turned off: the automation would run on every opportunity and do nothing.
What happens when the role already has someone
- Keep the current holder (default): the role holder doesn't change. This matters because the automation fires every time an opportunity enters the stage — an opportunity that moves back and forth won't keep swapping SDRs.
- Replace with the new agent: the new agent takes the role. The previous one stays on the opportunity and their recorded commission is not deleted — they simply stop holding that role.
In both cases the other roles on the opportunity are untouched. The automation never clears roles it didn't configure.
Change or remove the automation
Each stage has one Assignment automation. When you open the tab with an automation already active, the card at the top shows which one it is — configuring and saving again replaces it. To turn it off without losing the configuration, use Deactivate; to delete it for good, Remove.

If it didn't work
- The Role on the card option is disabled and won't turn on: the pipeline has no roles configured. Set them up in Pipeline settings → Agents & Teams and go back to the automation.
- Save says the role is missing: turning on Role on the card without picking which role configures nothing — select a role from the list.
- The role doesn't show on the opportunity after the automation runs: check that the role is still configured on this pipeline. A role removed from the pipeline stops being recorded, and the automation only sets the owner.
- The person got neither the role nor the ownership: they need to be linked to the pipeline. Link them in Pipeline settings → Agents & Teams.
- You can't open the automation: your role can't edit automations — see what to do when you're missing permission.
