  • How to create a site or page with Max (Max Design)

To create a site or page, talk to Max: in Marketing → Max Design, click Talk to Max and ask for what you want. Max creates a Max Design project, enters design mode in that conversation, shows the preview next to the chat and publishes when you approve.

Prerequisites: be logged into the workspace with creator access and have at least one project that has not been deleted. Max Design is in a testing phase and may not appear in your workspace menu yet. Without it, Max keeps building pages in the page editor.

When you create in Max Design, your pages are assigned to the available default workspace project. If there is no default, the oldest project that has not been deleted is chosen. When the site belongs to a funnel, Max can create the Max Design project in the funnel's project. This happens once: changing the default project later does not move these pages on subsequent publications.

    Ask Max for the site

    1. In the side menu, open Marketing → Max Design and click Talk to Max. A new conversation opens on the Max screen.
    2. Ask for what you want — for example: "capture page for a baking course, with a name and email form". To work on an existing project, say its name.
    3. Max creates the project (or uses the one you named) and the conversation enters design mode. The first time, it prepares the design environment before it starts building.

You can also ask from any conversation with Max, without going through the list. For a funnel with several pages (capture and thank-you, for example), Max uses a single project for all of them.

    Create a blank project

    1. In Marketing → Max Design, click Create blank.
    2. Type the Project name and click Create project.
    3. The project opens in a new conversation with Max, already in design mode. Ask for the first page whenever you want.

    Open a project

In the Max Design list, each row shows the project's status, how many conversations it has and when it was last updated.

    • Click the row to open the project's latest conversation, with the preview alongside. If the project has no conversation yet, a new one is created.
    • To start another conversation on the same project, open the row menu and click New conversation.

In the conversation lists (side menu, Max screen and All sessions), conversations in design mode show a website icon next to the title.

    Rename a project

    1. In the Max Design list, click the project name.
    2. Type the new name and press Enter (or click outside the field) to save.

In the preview you can also rename under Config → Project, in the Project name field: type and press Enter (or click outside) to save; Esc discards. Renaming does not change the page's public address.

    Delete a project

    1. In the list, open the project row menu and click Delete project.
    2. Confirm by clicking Delete. Deletion cannot be undone: it closes the editing environment, cancels publications in progress and takes the published site offline.
    3. If a funnel connection prevents deletion, remove that connection before trying again.

    The conversation's design mode

While Max works on a project, the conversation is in design mode. The message box glows and, in its footer next to the attach and dictation buttons, a chip shows the state:

    • Website icon + project name: Max is editing that project. On the Max screen, clicking the name shows the preview next to the conversation; in the floating panel, it opens the Max Design projects list.
    • Preparing…: the project environment is starting. Once it is ready, the Design environment ready line appears in the conversation and Max carries on by itself.
    • Try again: the design environment didn't start. Click it to retry. If that does not work, wait a moment and try again.

In design mode, Max edits the project files directly, without asking for confirmation on each change: every change shows up in the Changes to the project card (see Rewind a change). Two actions wait for your approval before they run: publishing the site and running a command in the project beyond the routine checks. The approval card says what will happen, for example "Max wants to publish the site of this project. It goes live when publication finishes."

Each conversation has its own mode. Max leaves design mode by itself when the site work is done and you move on to something else; right after delivering a page it stays in the mode, because you usually ask for adjustments. To go back to regular Max before that, click the chip's ✕ (Leave design mode) or ask Max to leave design mode: the chip and the preview go away right away. The project and its published pages stay as they were. To switch projects, ask Max for the other project in the same conversation.

The preview next to the chat

In design mode, the Max screen shows the project preview to the right of the conversation. On mobile the preview is not shown: the conversation stays in design mode and you check the result on the published site.

    • Max chat on the left — ask for changes in natural language ("add a testimonials section", "change the colors to match my brand"). Max edits the page's code and the preview reflects the changes at the end of each reply.
    • Max model — the selector sits at the top of the Max screen and shows the level that answers the conversation (Standard, Advanced or Ultra) and the Reasoning (Low, Medium or High). The change applies from your next message and only to the open conversation. See How do I choose the Max level and how much it reasons?.
    • Suggestions above the message box — chips with next steps (common page ideas at first; after each reply, what Max suggests for this page). Clicking fills in the message for you to adjust and send.
    • Hide preview / Show preview — the button at the top of the Max screen closes and reopens the preview without leaving design mode. Dragging the divider all the way also closes it.
    • Live preview on the right — shows the page as it currently stands. Use the buttons to switch between desktop and mobile views, reload the preview and copy its link. The preview address is separate from the application and stays the same when you reopen the project; anyone with the link can view the version being edited while its environment is active. It does not replace the published page address. If the preview stops responding, click reload to try opening it again. While the tab with the preview is visible, the environment stays active.
    • Shared preview link — opening the link does not turn the environment on. With the environment off (after a while without the preview open in Max Design), whoever opens the link sees Preview is asleep; reopen it in Max Design or Preview is not responding; reopen it in Max Design: open the project in Max Design and ask them to reload. With many requests in a row to the same link from the same network, it answers Too many preview requests; try again shortly: wait a few seconds and reload. To share the page publicly, use the published address.
    • Code mode — click Code at the top of the preview to view and edit the page's files directly. Click Preview to go back to the visual view.
    • Config mode — click Config at the top of the preview (next to Preview and Code) to open the Project settings. A side menu groups the sections, one on screen at a time: Project → General (name, address and last publish); Max context → Knowledge (the Project knowledge) and Design (the Project design guide); Publishing → Domain for published pages; AI → Image generation. When the panel is narrow, the menu becomes a scrollable bar at the top.
    • Drag the divider between chat and preview to resize the areas.

While the design environment is prepared, the preview shows Preparing the design environment… — the first time can take a few minutes. If the environment goes to sleep after a while idle, the preview wakes it up by itself when you open the conversation again. If the preview shows an error, click Try again.

    Rewind a change

Every time Max changes the project, the chat shows a Changes to the project card with the change code. In it:

    • Rewind to before: the project goes back to how it was before that change. Everything done after it is undone too.
    • Restore this version: the project becomes exactly what it was right after that change.

In both cases you confirm first, the preview reloads by itself and nothing is deleted: the rewind becomes a new change in the history, so you can go back again from another card (including undoing the rewind itself). Max continues the conversation from the project's current state.

    AI-generated images

Ask for an image in the chat ("generate a pour-over coffee photo for the hero", "replace the product image with a flat illustration") and Max generates it and places it on the page. The image becomes a project file (in Code, folder public/images/) and is published together with the page. In the conversation, the Generated image card shows the image and who generated it.

These images stay inside the project. For an image outside the site, such as a product or email cover, see How do I ask Max to generate an image?.

Who generates the image: today it is Max itself on Clickmax, and it tells you so in the reply. Workspace AI keys cannot be used for image generation yet, so the Automatic option always falls back to Clickmax.

In the preview's Config mode, the Image generation section has the Generate images with selector, which sets this per project. Options come in groups: under Clickmax, Automatic (the workspace image key when there is one, otherwise Clickmax) and the option to always generate on Clickmax; under Workspace keys, each registered image key and model (e.g. "OpenAI · GPT Image 1") — without a key, the group shows "No image key registered"; and finally Do not generate images. Below the selector, one line explains the chosen option (who generates the image, or what Max does without generating), and the Manage AI keys link opens the keys screen. With Do not generate images, Max generates no image at all and solves the visuals with CSS/SVG. If the saved key or model stops existing, the option shows as "unavailable" so you can switch. The choice applies from the next image on.

If generation fails, Max says so in the reply and builds the visual with CSS/SVG instead of leaving the section incomplete.

    Recreate from a reference site

Want a page that looks like an existing site (your current website, a landing page you like)? Paste the address in your request — for example, "create a site like https://clickmax.io" or "make a page inspired by https://example.com, with our brand".

Max takes a screenshot of the reference site to see its layout, colors, fonts and images, then reads the page: the order of sections and headings, the copy and value proposition, the menu and call-to-action buttons, and the images it uses. It then recreates the page in your project — same organization, same tone, similar colors — writing the code from scratch, without copying the site's HTML. It only opens the site you named.

About images: when the request is to reproduce the site, Max can download the logo and photos shown on it into the project's public/images/ folder (visible in Code) and use them on the page. It tells you in the reply which images came from the reference. Images that do not exist on the site are still AI-generated or built in CSS, as usual.

Limits: public internet addresses only (internal pages, pages behind a login or on your private network do not work); each reply opens at most 8 pages, counting reads and screenshots together; fine visual details may differ — ask for adjustments in the chat. If the site does not respond, Max says so and builds the page from your description. See also Read a page or look at a site.

    Attach images to the request

To show Max what you want, attach images to the message: a screenshot of a page you like, a sketch, a product photo or your logo. In a design mode conversation, there are three ways to attach:

    • click the attach button, in the bottom-left corner of the message box;
    • paste a copied image (Ctrl+V, or Cmd+V on a Mac) into the message box;
    • drag the images onto the message box.

The images show up as thumbnails above the text, and the X on each one removes it before sending. You can attach up to 4 images per message, as PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF (an animated GIF becomes a still image), up to 20 MB each; before sending, Clickmax shrinks each image to a light size. You can also send only images, without text.

Max sees the images together with the request. With a screenshot of a page, it follows the layout, hierarchy, colors and style, rebuilding it in your project instead of copying it. In the reply, it says what it took from each image.

Every image you send is also saved in the project, in the references/ folder (visible in Code). That folder is not part of the published page. If you want the image on the page (for example, "use the product photo at the top"), ask for it: Max copies the image to public/images/ and uses it from there.

Teach Max about the project (Project knowledge)

So Max understands what this project is without you repeating it on every message, click Config at the top of the preview and fill in the Project knowledge section. Write, in free text, what applies to the whole project:

    • the app's or site's purpose and target users;
    • APIs, database schema or architecture details the code must respect;
    • project-specific rules or constraints (what to always do and what to never do).

Not sure where to start? Click Start from a template to get an outline with those three blocks and fill it in. Click Save knowledge to apply — the Unsaved changes badge reminds you that nothing changes until you save, and Discard changes goes back to the saved text. Max takes the notes into account from your next message on, on any page of the project, with no code sync needed. The field accepts up to 20,000 characters.

Project knowledge is different from the Project design guide: the knowledge describes the business, the rules and the architecture; the design guide sets colors, fonts and tone of voice. Do not put passwords or API keys in the notes — they become conversation context, not a vault.

    Point Max at an element

Instead of describing "that blue button in the middle", you can point at the element right in the preview:

    1. Click the select element button in the preview bar.
    2. Hover over the page — the element under the cursor is highlighted — and click the one you want to change.
    3. The element becomes context attached to your next chat message. Describe the change and Max edits exactly that piece. Press Esc to leave selection mode.

Change a text right in the preview

To fix a heading, a paragraph or a button label, you don't need the chat:

    1. Click the Edit text button in the preview bar.
    2. Hover over the page — only editable texts are highlighted — and click the one you want to change. The text is selected so you can type over it.
    3. Press Enter (or click outside) to confirm; Esc cancels and restores the original text.

The change is applied in place, without reloading the preview: the page stays where you were, and the change is also written to the code and recorded as a version. If you see "We could not update this text", that snippet could not be safely located in the code (it repeats in more than one place or is generated dynamically) — the preview goes back to the original text and you can ask Max for the change in the chat.

At the top of the preview, next to the address, is the Project pages selector: it lists the pages the project has and switches the preview to the one you pick. Use it to check and edit an inner page without asking Max to navigate. Open in new tab opens the selected page, not always the home page.

    Comment right on the page

To gather everything that needs to change before asking — instead of sending one request at a time in the chat — leave your notes right on the page:

    1. Click the Comments button in the preview bar.

    2. Click the element you want to comment on. A box opens right next to it, with the "What needs to change here?" field. The element stays outlined while you write, and the box follows the page if you scroll.

    3. Write the note (up to 2,000 characters) and choose:

      • Resolve with Max (Ctrl+Enter, or Cmd+Enter on a Mac): saves the comment and sends it straight to Max (see Resolve with Max).
      • Just comment (Ctrl+Shift+Enter, or Cmd+Shift+Enter): saves the comment for you to handle later.

The X or Esc close the box and discard what you wrote.

With the tool on, every open comment becomes a number over the commented element and an item in the Comments panel, to the right of the preview. Clicking the number scrolls the list to the matching comment. Clicking the Comments button again turns the tool off: the numbers and the panel disappear, and the comments stay saved. Even when the tool is off, the button shows how many open comments the page has.

Comments are saved with the project and belong to the whole workspace — anyone who opens the project sees everyone's comments, not only their own. Each item in the list shows who wrote it and when, so you know where each request came from; if the author is no longer in the workspace, it shows Unknown author.

They are also per page: what you note on the pricing page does not show up on the home page. Switch pages in the preview to see that page's comments.

If you already handled a comment yourself, click the check icon (Mark as resolved): the number leaves the page and the comment moves to the Resolved filter at the top of the panel, where Reopen brings it back. The trash icon (Delete comment) removes it for good.

If Max rewrites the part of the page you commented on, the commented element may stop existing. The comment is not lost: it stays in the list with the Element no longer exists notice, for you to resolve or delete.

    Resolve with Max

Each open comment has a Resolve with Max button. With two or more open on the page, Resolve all with Max, at the top of the panel, sends them all at once.

The request goes into the project's conversation, the same one as the chat, as "Resolve comment 2: …". Max also receives the commented element and applies the change in the code. While it works, the comment shows Max is resolving….

    When Max finishes:

    • It changed the project: the comments in the request are marked as resolved and the Max resolved the comment notice appears. If it is not what you wanted, open the Resolved filter and click Reopen.
    • It changed nothing (for example, because the comment was ambiguous and it asked before guessing): the comments stay open and the Max didn't change the project notice appears. Answer in the chat and ask again.

You don't have to wait for Max to ask. If it is replying to another message, the comment shows In Max's queue and the request runs as soon as it finishes. Requests you make while it resolves another comment go together in the next message.

You can also ask in the chat in your own words, something like "handle the comments". Every message carries the open comments of the page shown in the preview, in the pin numbering, but Max only touches them when you ask. On that path nothing is marked as resolved automatically: once you have checked, resolve the ones that turned out right.

Edit the code directly (Code mode)

    1. At the top of the preview, click Code.
    2. In the file tree on the left, click the file you want to open — it becomes a tab above the code editor. You can open several files and switch between tabs; the X closes a tab (we ask for confirmation if there are unsaved changes).
    3. Make your changes. A dot next to the file name indicates unsaved changes.
    4. Click Save (or press Ctrl+S / Cmd+S). Each save is also recorded as a version of the page.

If Max creates new files during the conversation, use the refresh button at the top of the tree to reload the list.

When Max changes the page's code, it checks that the page compiles before replying: if something broke, it fixes it or tells you in the reply what is still broken.

Heads up: Max also edits these files while you chat with it — when both of you touch the same file, the latest saved change wins. Binary files (such as images) show up in the tree but cannot be edited in Code mode.

The project includes a design.md file at the root: it is the design guide Max follows on every page — brand identity, colors, fonts, and tone of voice. In a new project the guide starts pending and Max creates and saves it before starting the first page, using what you told it about the project and the workspace brand data, when there is any. The guide Max writes is always complete, with the sections Identity, Visual direction, Palette, Typography, Spacing and layout, Shape and depth, Components, Sections, Images and icons, Motion, Voice and copy, Accessibility and responsiveness, Project rules and Tokens, written in the language of your conversation. If the guide you saved (generated from the brand or uploaded as a file) is missing any of these sections, Max adds the missing ones the first time it works on the design, without changing what is already written. From then on, it follows the guide on every page. Edit it to change the visual direction of the whole project, or ask Max for the change in the chat (it keeps the file up to date).

To manage this guide without opening the code, click Config at the top of the preview and go to the Project design section (available once the project workspace is ready). There you see a preview of the current design.md, everything Max reads: the Palette, with every hex color mentioned in the guide and the name that precedes it (such as "primary"); the heading and body Fonts; a Components sample (heading, paragraph, buttons, link and a card) built with those colors and fonts; and the guide's text sections, such as Identity, Voice and copy (tone, words to prefer and avoid) and Project rules. If the project has no guide yet, the section says so and offers the two buttons. With a pending guide, the Guide pending notice appears: Max creates the guide before the pages, or you define it now with Edit or Generate from brand — saving there clears the pending state, and Max follows what you saved. To change the guide, click Edit: it opens a dialog with the design.md text — the Preview tab shows the formatted guide — plus Generate from brand (recreates the guide from your workspace's configured brand) and Upload file (uses your own .md or .txt, up to 64KB). The section's Generate from brand button opens the same dialog with the guide already regenerated, so you can review it before saving. Generate from brand needs a ready brand in Settings → Brands: without one, the dialog shows "Your workspace has no ready brand yet" with a Set up brand link, and the guide text stays as it is. If the project guide already matches the one generated from the brand, a notice says so and there is nothing to sync. Click Sync with project to save — the preview updates and Max follows the new guide from your next message on. Heads up: generating or uploading replaces the text shown in the dialog; the Unsynced changes badge reminds you that nothing changes in the project until you sync, and Cancel closes the dialog without touching the project.

    Purchase buttons

Max Design does not configure Clickmax checkout yet. Purchase buttons link to a checkout URL you already have: give Max the link and it adds it to the button. Without a link, Max points the button to a section of the page itself, and you can connect the real checkout link later, outside Max Design. Checkout and purchase triggers are not available for Max Design pages.

    Publish the page

You need permission to edit in Max Design to use Publish. With read-only access, the button stays disabled, but you can still check publication status. Ask your workspace administrator to adjust your access.

When the page looks the way you want:

    1. Save your changes and click Publish, in the top-right corner of the preview.
    2. Watch the status beside the button: Queued, Building site, Uploading files, Processing publication and Activating site mean the new version is not live yet. The button stays disabled while publication is in progress.
    3. Wait for Published. Open the status details and follow the Live site link to check the published version. The details show the version used by the attempt, when it finished and the version currently live.

You can also ask Max to publish in chat. Check and approve the requested action; Max starts publication and follows its status by itself. A publication-started message does not mean the site is live yet. When publication ends, the conversation shows Publication is live or The publication didn't go live, and Max carries on from there: with the site live, it knows the published addresses and can link each page to its funnel step in the same conversation.

You can close or reload the screen during publication. Returning recovers the status of the same attempt. Preview readiness is separate from publication status. If Status unavailable appears, open the details and click Refresh status before trying to publish again.

Publish static sites only: pages must be prepared before visitors arrive, with their files and addresses defined. Max Design does not host features that need a dedicated server running code on every visit. Ask Max to adapt pages that depend on that before publishing.

The published page gets its own public address — anyone with the link can open it, so share it wherever you want. By default that address is a subdomain set when the page is created, and it stays the same across publications. The subdomain never repeats a project's default address, and the site takes the whole address. If a project already uses the same address, publishing to the default address is refused: publish on a connected domain of your own (see below).

    Publish on your own domain

    1. Under Config → Domain, choose the Default address or a connected domain registered in Settings → Domains.
    2. Click Publish to apply the new destination. Saving the choice does not change the address of the live version. An attempt already in progress for the previous destination can no longer activate a new version.
    3. Wait for Published and check the Live site link. The previous version stays at its previous address until publication to the new destination finishes. Only then does the old address stop serving this site. If publication fails, the previous site stays available.

If the saved domain has been removed, select an available destination before publishing again.

After the first publication, the page also appears in Marketing → Pages, with its public address, thumbnail and visit metrics.

In the pages list, these pages carry the Max Design badge. Clicking the card (or Edit in Max Design, in the card menu) opens the project's conversation on the Max screen, with the preview alongside, so you can keep editing with Max and publish again.

In a funnel, link an already published Max Design page from My pages. It keeps its identity and metrics. Publishing the funnel uses the site version already live; publish in Max Design to update its content. Check capture forms and next-step destinations on the public page before sharing it.

Each published site address can be selected separately in Funnels v4, within the site's project. Choose one page at a time and click Link page. Occupied pages stay visible but cannot be linked again, including to a second step in the same funnel. If the list shows Could not load the pages. Try again., click Try again. No pages found means the list has no results: check the project, filters and whether the site has been published.

Configure navigation in Max Design and connect the corresponding steps on the canvas. Arrows represent your funnel; they do not change site button, link or form destinations. See how Max Design pages work in funnels.

Checkout and purchase triggers are not available for these pages: a purchase click does not confirm payment. Check purchase links and navigation on the public page before sharing it.

If a form in an old tab reports that page context is unavailable after changing the funnel binding or publishing, reload the page and submit again. That attempt is not recorded in another funnel.

If the funnel also contains pages from other editors, Publish all pages sends publication requests only for those other pages. The number of requests sent does not confirm that they are live. Wait and check the public pages before sharing; requests that could not be sent are shown separately. Max Design pages are excluded from this count and keep using the version already published in Max Design.

Duplicating a Max Design page, using it as a template or sharing it as a pack is not supported. Edit and publish the site in Max Design. If you remove a page from the site and publish again, it becomes unavailable in funnels that still reference it. Update those connections before sending visitors.

To update the site after new changes, click Publish again. The current version is only replaced after the new publication completes. Changes made after the attempt version was prepared need another publication.

If Publication failed appears, open the details, review the error with Max and publish again. A failed attempt does not replace the previous version: the Live site link still points to it. If no version has been published, there is no live site yet. Publication cancelled or Publication superseded end that attempt; check the saved destination and current status before publishing again.

If Could not publish appears, the notice says why:

    • The page has build errors: ask Max to fix them and publish again.
    • The chosen domain is not connected yet: finish connecting it in Config → Domain or switch back to the default address.
    • The project has no page ready to publish yet: ask Max to create one.
    • The project environment did not respond: try again in a moment.

Without a specific reason, review the project with Max (ask it to check for errors) and try again. If another tab already started a publication, follow that attempt's status before publishing again.

    Project status

Each row in the Max Design list shows a status badge:

    • Draft — the project has not been published yet; it only exists in the preview.
    • Published — the project has been published and is live.
